- How many people move each year?
In the United States, 22-25 percent of the population moves annually, reports the American Moving & Storage Association. That is 20 Million. The families moving into the United States is not included in this figure. Inbound statistics are difficult to capture.
- If so many people move every year, is moving difficult for children?
The Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry lists moving as the second largest stressor for children and adolescents.
- So many people moving, why is moving difficult for children?
A child's world is known only as their house, school, friends, and bedroom. In other words, a child only knows what he or she can see and touch.
- Why do children talk openly, stating, "I don't want to move?
"Children can not think into the future as adults do. Future thinking is called abstract thinking. Abstract thinking is not developed until teen years.
- How can a book help a child who is moving?
"Let's Move Together" has 46 color pages of cartoon shaped animals, insects, and reptiles showing a child the process of moving from planning, preparing, packing, and arrival at the new location. It is the only book covering all aspects of moving and includes simple exercises and self help.
- Why is a book better than a video?
Literature has been the cornerstone for expanding a child's world of objects. A child ages 3-7 is developing imagination through play and can use a book multiple times until the idea is mastered. Each page speaks to each child differently and the ability to ponder as long and often as the child wishes is the beauty of a book. Videos move too rapidly and the sequence may not apply to a particular child's need.
- Why is moving more difficult today?
Moving happens more frequently and quickly. With single parenting roles or both parents employed, there is less time to spend when preparing to move. The tasks take priority. More frequent moves disrupt a family's sense of community.
- Is it better not to talk about loss?
"Let's Move Together" deals with the issues of loss and healthy responses to loss. Not addressing loss leads to depression in later years. Depression is the second leading cause of adolescent suicide and substance abuse.
- Why is loss an important issue for young children?
Children have basic needs of physical care, safety, and belonging. The physical needs and safety are easier to address than belonging. The feelings of belonging include love, security, and acceptance. "Let's Move Together addresses the loss issues directly and indirectly with instructions and guidance.
- Do children have worries?
The Surgeon General devotes 100 pages to the mental health of children in his report released December 2000. The report shows "anxiety disorders comprise 13 percent of the disorders for children ages 9-13. At any one time, 10-15 percent of child and adolescent population have some symptoms of depression."
- How long does it take for a child to adjust to a new home?
A move can take up to 16 months before a child can begin to feel comfortable in the new location.
- What if the move is only 1/2 mile away?
The move distance is not the factor, it is the changing of objects: bedroom, home, school, playground, and friends that changes the world of a child.
- What if death or divorce necessitates the move?
Psychological issues of death or divorce are the primary issues and moving becomes a secondary issue. The issues are interrelated. Each issue requires attention and focus. "Let's Move Together" can provide information over and over again as many times as a child wishes to use the 46 sturdy pages, bound and glued for frequent use. A child may need to read or look at a book twenty five times to master the process of moving.
- How do you know if a child needs professional behavioral help?
If the symptoms of behavior witnessed by parents, teachers, or other adults last more than 3 months, an evaluation is suggested.
- Where do I seek professional behavioral assessment?
Contact your health care provider, human resource department, or school counselor for recommendations.
